Join VCMO to Build Your Fractional Marketing Career
The traditional career path is changing. If you’re a senior marketing professional seeking a switch to a portfolio career as a Fractional CMO, joining VCMO can help you get established in this new work style.
What Is a Portfolio Career?
A portfolio career in marketing involves taking responsibility for the marketing function across multiple organisations simultaneously, on a part-time or fractional basis. Unlike traditional full-time roles, operating as a Fractional CMO in a portfolio workstyle offers greater flexibility, autonomy, and diversity in work engagements. It can also help you achieve a better work-life balance.
Why More Senior Marketers Choose a Portfolio Workstyle.
Senior marketers are increasingly drawn to a portfolio workstyle for several reasons, including:
- Corporate Dissatisfaction: Rigidity in corporate structures and internal politics may drive a desire for greater autonomy and flexibility.
- Career Milestone Completion: After achieving significant milestones, senior marketers seek fresh challenges beyond traditional roles.
- Societal Contribution: Aspiring to use their skills for social good, marketers may engage in pro bono work or volunteer initiatives.
- Industry Diversification: Portfolio careers enable marketers to apply their expertise across diverse sectors fostering continual learning and skill development.
- Family Commitments: Flexible schedules accommodate caregiving responsibilities, such as looking after elderly relatives.
- Income vs. Hours: Portfolio careers offer competitive income with flexible working hours.
- Hobby Pursuits: Balancing professional commitments with personal interests leads to a more fulfilling lifestyle.
- Flexibility: Crafting schedules and choosing clients and projects that align with personal priorities.
- Greater Autonomy: Creative freedom and strategic decision-making shape projects and clients.
Key Drawbacks of a Portfolio Career
While a portfolio career offers numerous advantages, it's crucial to understand the potential drawbacks before diving into this workstyle. We don't want to put you off, but it's important to to carefully consider each of the following:
- Inconsistent Income: Portfolio careers may lead to fluctuating income streams due to variable client demand, potentially causing financial uncertainty and challenges in budgeting and planning for expenses.
- Limited Benefits: Unlike traditional employment, portfolio careers often lack benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, requiring individuals to manage their own benefits or forego them entirely.
- Work Overload: Juggling multiple clients and projects simultaneously can result in workload overwhelm, leading to stress, burnout, and difficulty maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
- Administrative Burden: Portfolio professionals must handle administrative tasks such as invoicing, bookkeeping, and client management independently, which can be time-consuming and detract from billable work hours.
- Client Acquisition: Continuously sourcing and securing new clients is crucial for sustaining a portfolio career, requiring ongoing networking, marketing efforts, and investment in building a strong professional reputation.
"A portfolio workstyle gives you the freedom to leverage your expertise across various clients in different sectors, enjoying a more dynamic and fulfilling career path. But you must weigh up the odds before choosing this path."

FAQ’s
Yes. You have the autonomy to decline any client opportunity offered to you. If you feel the client isn't the right fit or your schedule is too busy, it will be assigned to another Fractional Marketing Executive. Before joining the VCMO network, we conduct a thorough interview to understand your preferences, aiming for a better match between clients and your expertise.
No, we cannot guarantee a steady stream of clients as market demand can fluctuate. However, our marketing platform, content strategy, and partnerships are designed to generate interest in our services. By actively engaging with our content and promoting our value proposition within your network, you can enhance your visibility and increase your likelihood of attracting clients.
Yes, we do. Through utilising our brand, content strategy, tools, partnerships, and peer-to-peer support to enhance your profile and secure clients, we deduct a flat 10% from the standard daily rate. We find this rate to be highly competitive compared to similar networks, and it contributes to scaling the VCMO brand.
VCMO manages all client invoicing on your behalf. We collaborate with you to determine your service dates and any associated expenses, such as travel costs. Depending on your engagement frequency, clients will be invoiced after each day of hire or after a consecutive block of hire days. You will then submit an invoice to VCMO based on the agreed rate card, deducting the 10% commission retained by VCMO. Once the client's payment has been processed, we will transfer your funds. Our clients adhere to "payment on receipt" invoice terms, ensuring that you typically receive your payment within 7 days. We prioritise efficient and transparent payment procedures to support your financial well-being.
To become part of VCMO, you need to meet our minimum entry criteria (as outlined above) and fill out our readiness assessment (link above). If you meet our criteria, you'll be invited for an informal meeting with our Founder for a discussion about your motivations and aspirations. If there is a strong alignment and mutual interest to work together, we proceed with due diligence, which includes seeking references and validating your professional accreditations. Upon successful completion, we officially onboard you, announce your affiliation through PR channels, and introduce you to our network of members and partners.
When you join us, you will have access to a diverse range of peer-group communities. As well as the VCMO community, you have access to other specialist interest groups by virtue of our strategic partnerships with training providers and delivery partners. We strive to offer access to a vibrant community where you can share ideas, learn best practices, and enhance your marketing skills.
Should you determine that the VCMO network does not align with your expectations, the departure process is simple. We request written notice of your decision to leave, with a minimum of 4 weeks' notice, in accordance with the terms outlined in the Consultancy Agreement. We value transparency and aim to ensure that every member feels empowered to make informed decisions about their professional path. Upon departure, your personal profile will be removed from the VCMO website. However, any thought leadership content in which you participated, such as articles, podcasts, or videos, will remain on the VCMO website, and you are free to continue promoting that content.
Plenty! At VCMO, we understand that your business comes first, and we respect that. Our platform provides an additional avenue for expanding your client base and enhancing your personal profile. You have the freedom to select clients that best match your skills and availability, as well as the autonomy to apply your unique marketing approach. However, when working with a client sourced by VCMO, we expect the utmost professionalism, trustworthiness, and client dedication. In these instances, you will operate under the VCMO brand, utilising a vcmo.uk email address and branded administration templates. All client interactions and data sharing will be facilitated through a secure client portal provided by VCMO. Invoices will be issued and managed centrally by VCMO.
We provide an array of tools to aid you in acquiring new clients and engaging with existing ones. These include client administration templates, pitch documents for business development, licensed consultancy methodologies, and strategic frameworks. Additionally, we encourage the sharing of your own tools across the network, facilitating knowledge exchange and the enhancement of project delivery processes. Through participation in our content strategy, you also gain access to a wealth of evergreen content that can be repurposed and shared with your network.
Strategic marketing knows no bounds. We are equipped to assist organisations of all sizes, across various industries and regions, and at any stage of the business journey. The most impactful collaborations arise with clients who acknowledge their marketing challenges, harbour a steadfast drive for growth, and cultivate an environment conducive to change. Typically, our smallest clients boast a minimum turnover of £2m / €2m / $2m, indicating their readiness to invest confidently in our services.
After we have verified your credentials, you'll need to sign our Mutual Confidentiality Agreement (MCA) and a Consultancy Agreement. We'll assist you in creating your website profile using a provided template and request high-resolution photos for your personal bio. Additionally, we'll draft a press release for your approval, incorporating a quote from you. We'll also provide assets so you can add a new experience to your LinkedIn profile.
If you need us to procure IT equipment and telephony, we'll introduce you to our IT solutions partner and arrange for a laptop to be sent to your preferred address. Your enterprise grade applications and security will be set up remotely. The process can take between 24-72 hours depending on your laptop specification and availability.
Upon agreement to work with your first client, you'll be granted a vcmo.uk email address and access to the VCMO portal for managing client information sharing. You'll also receive an onboarding session with our Founder to familiarise you with our tools, strategic partners, and address any questions you may have.
